At this time, Italy was in political chaos; a number of city-states including Florence, Milan, Venice, and Naples all fought for control of Italy, along with Spain, France, and the Holy Roman Empire. Each one attempted to manipulate one another as to get the upper hand, they resorted to malicious practices such as blackmail and crude violence. Christmas Carol Charles Dickens Essay When Charles Dickens was a child, his entire family was put in a deptaters prison as his father owed money. As Dickens struggled through horrific factory conditions, he witnessed people and events that stayed with him for the left of his life. When Dickens father was released after inheriting some money, Dickens returned to school where he furthered his education and went on to careers such as a Law Clerk and a Journalist and eventually becoming a writer. Charles Dickens was the second eldest child well-known, respected writer of the 19th Century but he was not really noticed until the 20th Century. He was not shy in expressing his deep-felt of the society in which he lived. His childhood was the basis of his writing about the appalling conditions of the dark society that surrounded him. Through his career he carried his childhood, which was lined with the torment of social and economic life on the streets of London in this Victorian England. The Novel is about an orphan called Oliver Twist who was born into the workhouse just before his mother died. With no way to know if Oliver has a father, he was legally the responsibility of the Parish Board. This branded Oliver with the title of a workhouse boy. The novel continues by explaining the life of Oliver Twist from his first job as an undertaker to being involved in crime and the corrupt Legal system. Dickens mentions things in this story to illustrate to the reader about the bad conditions of which the way people were treated and forced to live in. In this essay I will describe the social problems which Dickens portrayed about the 19th Century through the novel Oliver Twist. In England in the 1830s, people was moving from the country to the town in search o a better economy and way of living. The rapid growths of towns were to much for the towns to handle and overcrowding became a major problem. It was not until 1834 when the poor law was passed that the people in the country received help from the government.  In this Victorian novel, there was the rich, the poor and the middle class. The poor majority lived by working as servants to the middle and upper classes, staying in the workhouses, crime and prostitution. The struggle to survive has tough, and with large families, overcrowding and medicine only in its infancy, diseases such as Cholera and tuberculosis spread rapidly through the poorer classes and many people died. Children had to work from a young age to help support the family, with a low income. This meant that many children received little o no education. The upper class was split into two main sections, the Naveau-riches and the aristocracy. The Naveau-riches (new rich) were people who became wealthy by working and making there own business such as factories and law practices. The aristocracy was people who became wealthy through inheritance. The aristocracy looked down upon the Naveau-riches because they thought that it was beneath them to work and that they were not the, True Upper Classes.  The Middle Class was in charge of the running of the workhouses. The workhouses were put in place to help support the poor. In 1834, the Poor Law stated that the poor could only receive government assistance if they left there own homes or wherever they were living and entered the workhouse. The workhouse was a place where the poor could receive shelter in very crowed conditions. Dickens shows through the pages of Oliver twist that people who entered the workhouse received no consideration from others in any class. We see this when he describes Oliver in the workhouse. Despised by all and pities by none  The people in charge of the workhouses thought that they were doing Gods work by making there lives a misery. Dickens describes the very bad conditions of the workhouse and the appalling way that illustrating to us that the people were almost equal to Inmates treated the people inside the workhouse. They usually split families up and they were not permits any contact with each other. The main reason for this was to stop Husbands and wives reproducing. In the novel, Dickens refers to the characters in a special way. He uses their names to reflect there personality and occupation mixed together. Mr Bumble is the Beadle in the story. He claims to be doing the work of Christianity however he is a greedy, selfish, arrogant man which is symbolic to his name Bumble. With this, Dickens portrays the image that Beadles in general, do not care about the people in there care.   Yes, I think it is rather pretty, said the Beadle,  glancing proudly downwards at the large buttons  which embellished his coat.  Another example is The Artful Dodger (Jack Dawkins). This name tells us that criminals like Jack are all carefully skilled in dodging the eyes of the victim. The name Oliver Twist describes the events in Olivers life, unfortunate and fortunate times. Dickens also strongly criticises the legal system of the 1830s. In the novel, when Oliver meets Jack Dawkins, Mr Fagin offers him shelter. Fagan is a criminal who trains orphan boys to pick pocket. When Oliver sees two other boys pickpocket a handkerchief from an elderly gentleman, he cannot believe what he sees and runs away. After an attempt from Oliver to escape from the crowed perusing him, he is caught. Dickens illustrates to us the harsh reality of the Legal system when Oliver is being convicted. When they were in court, Oliver was pleading his innocence and even had the backing of the victim of the crime. However, the judge dismayed the witness testimony of innocence of Oliver. This shows us that the Law didnt need evidence but only the reputation of someone to make a conviction. Another thing that Dickens showed us about the Legal system was that they had no consideration for the person on trial, even if he was a sick child. We see this when twist asks for a drink of water when he was not feeling well, but his request was declined. Also, Dickens recalls his Childhood through the legal system and his attitude portraying how harsh the Punishment was and the Prison conditions being fair. We see this when a young boy is sent to prison for sleeping under a haystack.  Two men and a boy were in a cage in Kingston..  The suspicious circumstances however they had  Been discovered sleeping under a haystack. Dickens describes the Legal System as harsh, not accurate uncaring and the prisons are in bad condition, all through the novel Oliver Twist.  Dickens Portrays London at this time as a society littered with crime, prostitution, disease and unemployment. The poor at this time very often turned to crime due to orphanage or unemployment. This was because the workhouse had been given a bad reputation for the bad conditions and little food supply. People needed to stay alive and so the only way that the lower class thought that they could. Dickens portrays this with Feigns orphan boys pick pocketing.

Lord Capulet free essay sample

Romeo and Juliet, a play about two love birds from disputing families. Lord Capulet wants to give the impression of a man with much honor and peace; however when away from the public, Capulet is a fairly complicated individual. Confronted by the true death of Juliet, he let go of his foul ways and ended their family rivalry. After Juliet declined the offer of marriage with Paris, Capulet went in rage. â€Å"Unworthy as she is, that we have wrought so worthy, a gentleman to be her bride? † (3. 5. 144-145) â€Å"Out, you green sickness, carrion! Our, you baggage! You tallow face! † (3. 5. 56-158) Note, earlier in the play, when Juliet was an obedient daughter and followed traditions, he showed consideration of her thoughts and cared about her future. Yet his sadness seemed to be stained with the thought that he will die without heirs and that the wedding is spoiled. It’s only when he sees Juliet in the tomb bleeding and dead does his sorrow over her loss and over his role in the feud seem complete. â€Å"O brother Montague, give me thy hand. † (5. 3. 13) â€Å"As rich shall Romeo’s by his lady’s lie, poor sacrifices of our enmity. † (5. 3. 19-20) Juliet’s doings tainted old Capulet’s temper, but so did the death of Tybalt. Tybalt Capulet, the nephew of the famed Lord Capulet who acted as the protector of the Capulet’s good name. Every scene incorporating Tybalt, included dueling and tension. He was always looking for a duel. When Tybalt and Mercutio fought and Mercutio was killed, it created a domino. Romeo killed Tybalt after the fact, Romeo was banished which made Juliet sad, and Lord Capulet felt as if he was under pressure because of the incident. He appears to be more concerned about how the marriage may affect the townspeople’s views on the seriousness or relaxed of his grieving for Tybalt. â€Å"For, hark you, Tybalt being slain so late, it may be thought we held him carelessly, being our kinsman, if we revel much. Therefore we’ll have some half a dozen friends, and there an end. † (3. 4. 25-29) That’s why he assumed that he was doing Juliet a favor and that she would go along with it. â€Å"Sir Paris, I will make a desperate tender of my child’s love. I think she will be ruled in all respects by me. † (3. 4. 12-14) In real, Juliet didn’t want to, and voiced her opinions to her father, which showed an obvious change from Lord Capulet. Juliet was forced to speed up her plan, creating a catastrophe, all due to the foolish actions of Tybalt and the inaccurate assumptions of Lord Capulet. Although, Capulet didn’t intentionally mean to push her daughter to death, he only wanted the best for her. There were many reasons why Lord Capulet changed. Marriage, death, defiance, and drama; yet the primary reason for his behavior was his daughter. Another way that the book of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn can be looked at from a biographical perspective and make sense is the fact that the main characters in the novel have a very similar background as to which they grew up in. In a paragraph written by an African American professor of eastern studies and a writer of African-American folktales and poetry. A man by the name of Julius Lester speaks of the relationship between Huck, Tom, and Mark Twain himself in a very unique manner. Just after he speaks of how he does not recollect ever reading the writings of Mark Twain, but then says something to the effect of what American child hasnt read the tales of Huck and Tom so maybe he has, but the literature was not that significant to his life. What Lester has to say is something that most people taking the biographical interpretation approach should use as an approach to all authors in relation to the characters they write of: I do have an emotional memory of going to Hannibal, Missouri with my parents when I was eight or nine, and visiting the two-story frame house where Mark Twain lived as a boy-where Huck and Tom lived as boys. (Pg. 341, Morality and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn) This is a great comment because when you take a novel and  try and put a biographical interpretation onto that novel you need to take a very close look at the characters and their relation to the author. That is the mainstay of the biographical interpretation, how the characters are at all a parallel to the author. With Mark Twain himself growing up for part of his life on the Mississippi it gave him great knowledge of what he was talking about, and it gave him the roots of the characters that are now notable American icons. Him having the knowledge of the Mississippi, and of southern life in America at that time influenced the characters and the novel infinitely. Whether it is a satirical look at the way American life was at that time is a whole different essay. With all of this in mind it can be said that he sure lived the life of Huck and Tom whether it be on a lower level, or a parallel these characters and Mark Twain are one in the same. These are only a few examples of how the biographical interpretation of a novel is a very reliable approach to analyzing literature as long as you know that the biographical information is accurate. Doing this will also make the novel much more enjoyable because if you read the biographical essay, paragraph, novel, etc. Then you will be able to go along the book and be able to not look down upon the book, but look more for the reason that that author had said what he said, and what he really meant by it. It is about looking from the inside and looking out at the novel for the reasons behind what was said, instead of looking into the novel for the reasons to not read the book altogether

Robinson: The Lizzie Borden case has mystified and fascinated those interested in crime forover on hundred years. Very few cases in American history have attracted as much attention as the hatchet murders of Andrew J. Borden and his wife, Abby Borden. The bloodiness of the acts in an otherwise respectable late nineteenth century domestic setting is startling. Along with the gruesome nature of the crimes is the unexpected character of the accused, not a hatchet-wielding maniac, but a church-going, Sunday-school-teaching, respectable, spinster- daughter, charged with parricide, the murder of parents, a crime worthy of Classical Greek tragedy. This is a murder case in which the accused is found not guilty for the violent and bloody murders of two people. There were the unusual circumstances considering that it was an era of swift justice, of vast newspaper coverage, evidence that was almost entirely circumstantial, passionately divided public opinion as to the guilt or innocence of the accused, incompetent prosecution, and acquittal. 	Not much is described of Lizzie Andrew Borden's childhood. On March 1, 1851, Emma Lenora Borden was born to Andrew and Sarah Borden, and on July 19, 1860, Lizzie had arrived. While Lizzie was at the young age of two, Sarah died of uterine congestion. In 1865, Andrew Borden wed Abby Durfee-a short, shy, obese woman who had been a spinster until the age of 36. Abby's family were not as well off as the Bordens. 	Lizzie suffered from psychomotor epilepsy, a strange seizure of the temporal lobe that has one distinct symptom: a "black-out" in which the patients carry out their actions in a dream state, aware of every action without knowing what they are doing. Lizzie Borden seemed to have two entirely different personalities: the good daughter (a member of the Congressional Church, and a brilliant (conversationalist), and the bad daughter (deeply resentful of the patriarchy). These two personalities could be explained by the families' contradiction about their social statuses. She also had a habit of stealing from the local merchants. How Issues Are Affected By the Political Spectrum

On April 30, 1789, the United States of America elected our first president to lead our country. Then every four years thereafter, another president is elected. When election time comes around most Americans do not know anything about the issues involved and/or do not even know who is running. The two current candidates this year are Al Gore, the Democrat, and George Bush, the Republican. Three main issues that both parties deal with are Social Security, Tax Reform, and Education. Depending on each candidate†s political platform, they can be placed approximately on the political spectrum. Knowing where a candidate stands on the political spectrum, you can assume how he would feel on certain issues. Social Security is a huge issue this year because many citizens are concerned that they are paying the social security tax, but with the current plan, the money will run out by the time they get old enough to use it. Al Gore plans on taking social security and putting it aside and adding the interest gained to it which in his words, â€Å"I will keep it in a lockbox. The interest savings, I would put right back into it. That extends the life for 55 years† (Issues2000. om). Gore†s plan relates to the liberal side of the political spectrum. Normally most liberals believe in more government involvement and less big corporations. He is saying that the social security tax will go into a â€Å"lockbox† and no money will be taken out of it leaving it all to the government. â€Å"Today liberals view government as protecting individuals from being abused by a variety of governmental and nongovernmental forces, such as market vagaries, business decisions, and discriminatory practices† (Burns 243). This leads into why George Bush is a conservative. He plans on taking social security and putting it into the hands of our citizens and allowing them to invest their money in stocks. Bush wants to take the money out of the government†s hands and put it in the individual†s hands. â€Å"†¦ I†m going to trust [young workers] at their option to be able to manage, under certain guidelines, some of their money to get a better rate of return so that they†ll have a retirement plan in the future†¦ † (issues2000. com). Basically he is trying allow the â€Å"young workers† to control their social security rather than the government. This issue shows how two different sides of the political spectrum can affect the way they attack a problem. Tax Reform is another issue where both candidates differ greatly. Al Gore believes there should be a tax cut for the lower class and middle class families, but not for the wealthy class. This is true for a normal liberal to say. They believe the government should help those who are in need and leave those who don†t alone. â€Å"Liberals†¦ prefer that government take care of the weak, for the strong can nearly always take care of themselves† (Burns 244). With Gore†s plan, the typical family†s taxes would be the lowest in fifty years. This is definitely taking care of the weak part of society, the typical family. Bush, on the other hand, says he wants a tax cut for everyone. He believes everyone should deserve a tax relief, not just the middle class. This sounds good, but really the biggest cut would be in the upper class, who really do not need a tax cut. This just shows how Bush is being conservative by helping the big businesses, which make up most of the upper class. â€Å"Traditional conservatives, in the name of freedom, are emphatically pro-business† (248). Each candidate tries to show why their tax reform plans are better, but it just comes down to how each candidate relates to the political spectrum. Another big issue this year is Education. Both candidates feel differently about this issue. Al Gore believes that students who attend a failing school would be allowed to go to better school until that school is reopened under new management. He also says that schools that are doing poorly in student achievement would be given a fund to help them improve. Any progressing school would be given financial awards to help them strive to become better. This is considered a liberal view because he is saying that any weak school will be helped out by the government. In addition, he is supporting the improvement of some schools that are not meeting the standards. George Bush agrees somewhat, but he believes that if a school is failing, they have three years to fix the problems. If they don†t, they will be shut down and are demanded to give some money towards sending the students to other schools. He also says he would require testing be done every year. The schools that improve would get a bonus while the schools that are failing would lose some federal funds (English handout). Conservatives are also inclined to believe that those who fail in life are in some way the architects of their own misfortune and thus must bear the main responsibility for solving their own problems† (Burns 247). He is conservative by saying that the responsibility of failing schools is to fix the problems themselves. Some parts of this issue, education, Gore and Bush agree on but for the most part, they are like on two different sides of the political spectrum. Knowing where the candidate is located on the political spectrum, each issue can be related to how the candidate feels. Even though there are many issues a soon-to-be president has to discuss, there are definitely three main issues that affect everyone somehow. They all show a definite side of the political platform by each candidate. Each candidate†s side was relating to one side of the political spectrum such, as Democrats tend to be liberal, while Republicans are considered conservative. Referring back to the first paragraph, maybe we should model after our ancestors back when majority of our citizens actually cared about who was running and how they felt on the issues.

Proper internal control not only ensures that the assets and records are safeguarded, but also creates an environment in which efficiency and effectiveness are encouraged and monitored. This report is mainly focused on internal audit and internal control system in a company. In this case, the company is Kejora Bhd.. This report also focused on two main questions to be answered which is regarding on the evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of Kejora Bhd.’s control environment. Another question is regarding on the factors in Kejora Bhd.’s control environment have lead to and facilitate one of Kejora Bhd.’s division which is the Fabricator Division’s general manager named Adam. This case is all about Kejora Bhd.’s rules of conduct and its internal control system. There are basically four rules of conduct which is integrity, competency, objectivity and confidentiality to be joint with the Kejora case. What factors in KejoraBhd’s control environment have lead to and facilitated Adam’s manipulation of inventory? Based on the task, the factor that lead Adam to manipulate the inventory because he wants to avoid reduces of bonus and salary. Kejora Bhd’s procedure is to give salary depends on high performance of the staff. This lead Adam to manipulate the inventory which is considered as fraud. Adam does not have competency knowledge to compete with the competitor and Adam not integrity in his job. Furthermore, the other factor that lead Adam to do fraud is Kejora Bhd does not have an internal audit to control the environment. It helps Adam to do the fraud without any risk as there are no internal audit to found out the fraud. Morever, Kejora Bhd corporate intervention only occurred when planned result were not obtained. When Adam did fraud by showing constant or good profitability, so there won’t be corporate intervention occurred and it is a encouragement for Adam to manipulate the inventory. In addition to, Adam did fraud because he wants to get maintain performance to get compensator packages which can lead him to make fraud by increasing the performances constantly. The other factor is it easy to control the inventory as the inventory section is weak. This is because the no proper internal audit to maintain it. It can be see when Adam manipulates the inventory to show a constant profitability and avoid the salary and bonus. Besides that, the employee is not following the compliance which is the code of conduct. Adam does not follow the law of audit. Moreover, Adam does not have loyalty and ethical value on his job. According to this, Adam attitude will affects other employee in the firm. Furthermore, there is no participation by the those charged with governance of the entity. The top management should always take a part in the entity. But in this case the board of directors and audit is not very active. When they are not concern about their management, Adam as one of higher position officer in the company make own decision which excess of his limit which consider as fraud. More than that, this entity does not have an organize structure to perform the business. In this case, this entity does not have a proper internal audit and the board directors is not very active. Besides that, all the staff in the entity should be responsible in their authority. In this case, certain staff does not play their role properly as Adam does not play his role properly and this lead him to do fraud. The human resources not only responsible to hiring employee but also have to provide a practice to train employee. Eventhough the entity’s human resources have proper policies but Human Resources department forget to monitor employee which weak in code of conduct. Adam whom responsibly done his work for 7 years and finally lead to fraud because of weakness of management which give encourage to fraud. Conclusion Based on the case, there are several things that has to be put into consideration. First of all, the management and internal control as well as internal audits must be compliance to laws, procedures and policy of the company. In this case, Mr. Adam cannot manipulate the inventories as it is very unethical to his profession. Although the rationality of him doing that is because he is afraid that his salary and bonus will be reduced, he still must be compliance to the rules of conduct when doing his job. Here, we can see that the internal control is not very strong because the employees such as Mr. Adam are able to do things that can jeopardize the company’s reputation by altering its business records. Second, Kejora Bhd. must hire an internal audit to examine all the financial statements all the time. The board of directors and the audit committee should also be active and provide full participation on the management of kejora Bhd.

Learn About the Birth Place of William Shakespeare Its no secret that William Shakespeare was from England, but many of his fans would be hard pressed to name exactly where in the country the writer was born. With this overview, discover where and when the bard was born, and why his birthplace remains a tourist attraction today. Where Was Shakespeare Born? Shakespeare was born in 1564  into a prosperous family in Stratford-upon-Avon in  Warwickshire, England. The town is about 100 miles northwest of London. Although there is no record of his birth, it is presumed that he  was born on April 23 because he was entered into the baptism register of  Holy Trinity Church  shortly after. Shakespeares  father, John, owned a large family house in the town center that is thought to be the bards  birthplace. The public can still visit the very room in which it is believed Shakespeare was born. The house sits on Henley Street - the main road that runs through the middle of this small market town. It is well preserved and is open to the public via the visitor center. Inside, you can see how small the living space was for the young Shakespeare and how the family would have lived, cooked and slept. One room would have been John Shakespeares workroom, where he would have tailored gloves to sell. Shakespeare was expected to take over his fathers business one day himself.   Shakespeare Pilgrimage For centuries, Shakespeare’s birthplace has been a place of pilgrimage for the literary-minded. The tradition started in 1769 when David Garrick, a famous Shakespearean actor, organized the first Shakespeare festival in Stratford-upon-Avon. Since then, the house has been visited by scores of famous writers including: John Keats (1817)Sir Walter Scott (1821)Charles Dickens (1838)Mark Twain (1873)Thomas Hardy (1896) They used diamond rings to scratch their names into the glass window of the birth room. The window has since been replaced, but the original glass panes are still on display. Thousands of people every year continue to follow this tradition and visit Shakespeare’s birthplace, so the house remains one of Stratford-upon-Avon’s busiest attractions. Indeed, the house marks the starting point of the annual parade walked by local officials, celebrities, and community groups each year as part of the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations. This symbolic walk starts in Henley Street  and ends at Holy Trinity Church, his burial place.  There is no specific recorded date of his death, but the date of the burial indicates  he died April 23. Yes, Shakespeare was born and died on the same day of the year! Participants of the  parade pin a sprig of the herb rosemary to their outfits to commemorate his life. This is a reference to  Ophelias line in Hamlet: Theres rosemary, thats for remembrance. Preserving the Birthplace as a National Memorial When the birthplace’s last private occupant died, money was raised by committee to buy the house at auction and preserve it as a national memorial. The campaign gained momentum when a rumor spread that P. T. Barnum, the American circus owner wanted to buy the house and ship it to New York! The money was raised successfully and the house is in the  hands of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. The trust subsequently bought other Shakespeare-related properties in and around Stratford-upon-Avon, including his mothers farm house, his daughters town house and his wifes family home in nearby Shottery. They also own the land where Shakespeares final home in the town once stood. Today, the Shakespeare Birthplace House has been preserved and converted into a museum as part of a larger visitor center complex. It is open to the public all year.
